Terms 3 and 4
English
In English this term we will be:
- Finishing our traditional tales and visiting the forest school.
- Looking at a book called Hodgeheg, from which we will be writing for different purposes including instructions, road safety posters and animal poems.
Next term we will be:
- Continuing to look at using writing for different purposes through exploring fictional and non-fictional texts.
Topic: Animals
This topic includes Science, History, Geography and Music.
Science
We will be learning to:
- Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
- Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
Next term we will be learning to:
- Identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees
- Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
Geography
We will be learning to:
- Name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans.
- Name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas.
In ICT, we will:
- Be learning the rules of the i-zone.
- Be learning to understand how to use a simple computer program to create art.
- Be learning how to use computers to program.
- Be using technology to create, store, retrieve digital content.
- Be learning how we use technology outside of school.
In Read, Write, Inc, we will:
- Be learning new sounds and continuing to revise our sounds.
- Be continuing to Fred Talk new words to improve our spelling.
- Be continuing to work on sentence structure.
- Be reading a variety of texts to help our comprehension
Please support your child at home by practicing sounds with them and reading with them every night.

This week we are celebrating ‘Book Week’ at St. Michael’s (Monday 29th February- Friday 4th March). World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March. We have planned and prepared many exciting things for the children. - Holocaust Memorial Day 2016

Black History Month UK – an International annual month, celebrating, recognising and valuing the inspirational individuals and events from within the BME communities. During Black History Month, we remember and celebrate the important people from the past and also who contribute to and help our society today. - Welcome to St Michael’s RC Primary School’s new website
We wanted a new website to better collaborate with our parents, children, staff and associates allowing us to keep everyone updated on all that is happening at St Michael’s RCP.
Year 1 Homework and Reading for this Term
Children will be rewarded for completion of homework and for reading at home.
Reading
We will continue to change pupil’s books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Each pupil will have their book home for two nights. After your child has read their book the first night with you, use the second night to question your child, check understanding and to revise any words that your child struggled with. Please sign in their learning journal to say your child has read and leave a comment if you feel necessary.
*If your child does not put their book in the book box their book will not be changed. Furthermore, if your child’s learning journal is not signed it will not be changed.
Spellings
A spelling list will be stuck into your child’s learning journal every Monday. It is important you help your child learn these spellings in the week as they will be tested on them that Friday in class. We will keep a copy of your child’s results as well as informing you of any errors via their learning journal.
Homework
Homework will be sent home every Friday and should be returned for marking by the following Thursday. Homework will reflect what your children is learning in class and will be incorporate a range of subjects.
Throughout the term we may send some extra homework to enhance your child’s learning. This will always be recorded in their learning journals.
