What Year 4 are up to this term!

English

Year 4 will be looking in depth at Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White and through this, the children will be studying a number of different genres in their writing which will involve the study of characters and settings in the story fitting in with the objectives from the national curriculum.

The main focus towards the end of this topic will be non-chronological reports and the children will be creating their own information leaflet.

Maths

The focus will be on Fractions, decimals and measurements.

The children will:

-Count up and down in tenths and hundredths and recognise the decimal equivalents

-recognise, write and find unit and non-unit fractions of objects and quantities.

-recognise and show common equivalent fractions

-adding and subtracting fractions

-solve problems involving all of the above

-dividing and multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 when converting measurements

Science:

Sound

  • Identifying how sounds are made
  • Recognising that vibrations from sound travels through a medium to the ear
  • Finding patterns between the pitch of a sound and the features of the object
  • Finding patterns of the volume of the sound and the strengths of the vibrations
  • To recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the source is increased

Following the completion of sound we will be beginning to look at how materials change their state of matter linking it in with the water cycle.

History and Geography:

During term 3 year 4 will be studying the history of the Viking era: their life, invasions with an element of art and DT combined. In term 4 the children will be studying human geography where their main focus will be on settlements to tie in with the previous topic of the Vikings.

Religion

Term 3

The topic is ‘Jesus the Teacher.’ The children will be learning:

-To know that Jesus was born a Jew

-To know about the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

-To know about the Baptism of Jesus

-To know that Jesus called people to follow him

-To know about Jesus and his teachings (Parables)

Term 4

The topic is ‘Jesus the Saviour.’ The children will be learning:

-To know that Jesus is truly God and truly human

-To know about Jesus’ Entry into Jerusalem

-To know about the different days of Holy Week

-To begin to understand why Jesus died on the Cross

-To know about Jesus’ resurrection

In Physical Education, we will:

  • Learn about the importance of exercise
  • Understand that exercise has an effect on our body and level of fitness

Homework

Reading: Each child will receive a reading book which should be read daily.

CHILDREN’S JOURNALS MUST BE SIGNED EVERY NIGHT AFTER THEY HAVE READ. IF YOUR CHILD’S JOURNAL IS NOT SIGNED THEN THEY CAN NOT DO THEIR QUIZ OR CHANGE THEIR BOOK!

Maths and English: Maths and English homework will alternate each week.

The children will receive their homework on a MONDAY to be completed and due back on a FRIDAY each week.

Spelling: Children will be given a spelling list every MONDAY and tested every FRIDAY.

A spelling list will be stuck into homework books and learning journals every Monday. It is important that pupils bring in both their homework books and learning journals every day to ensure they have every opportunity to learn spellings. The pupils will have a spelling test on Fridays and incorrect spellings will be identified to parents so that further work can be done on them at home.

Times Tables: The children will have a times table challenge every Friday. Based on their progress each week they will be informed which times tables they should be revising.

Some topics will require additional homework such as a research task. Children will be notified about this in class. All homework will be written into homework journals.
