Guided Reading

When reading, pupils will be working towards achieving a standard of reading that is both fluent and efficient. In addition they will be learning to use dictionaries to check the meaning of words and identify themes across a range of books. Accelerated Reading books will be sent home every night and tested via a short quiz upon completion of the book. Please read with your child every night and make a note of it in their learning journal.

Homework

Every Friday pupils will take home a piece of English, Maths and Topic homework. This will either assess learning that has taken place or prepare pupils for the week ahead. Please help your child complete and return it before the following Wednesday.

Spellings will be sent home on a Monday and tested on a Friday. Please help your child learn them, perhaps even creating mnemonics for the words they find tricky e.g. BECAUSE = Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants.

Times Tables are key to progress at Key Stage 2 and any child who practises them daily will be fully prepared for the learning taking place in class. Specific times tables will be sent home on a Monday and tested the following Friday. Please help your child learn them daily.

Children who are read to, with and listened to read on a daily basis make accelerated progress throughout their academic careers and it is a key indicator of success in later life. Please check that your child is ready to read with their specially assigned Accelerated Reading book each night. Your comments are extremely helpful and we welcome any contribution you can make in the learning journals.
