Secondary School Admissions Presentation

The transfer from primary to secondary education is an exciting time for young people and their families. There is a wide range of opportunities available to your child as we have a diverse mix of schools open to all children, these include grammar schools, academies, single sex schools and faith schools. All of these schools have a single aim, which is to ensure that all young people have a happy and successful time at their secondary school.

What Year 5 are up to in term 3/4

 

 

We have many interesting things planned for the next few months. Year 5 will be buzzing with the exploration of the Anglo-Saxons and Scots, WW1, Properties of materials, problem solving, investigating, exercising and much more! There is much to experience this term including themed weeks, interesting topics and school visitors.

 

As always in year 5 we will be looking forward to approaching our challenges with resilience and enjoyment and we are excited to discover all of the amazing things that lie ahead!

In Religion

Term 3: Inspirational People

The children will learn about what it takes to be an inspirational person and the qualities they have. They will understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus and that we are called to love God. We will explore the stories of people who showed great love for others.

Term 4: Reconciliation

The children will learn about the story of ‘The Lost Son’ and what it means to be truly sorry. We will discover more about the sacrament of reconciliation and what happens during it. They will learn that their actions have consequences and how to make good choices.

Computing:

Term 3: Cryptography

The children will be cryptographers - Cracking codes

Term 4

The children will be architects - Creating a virtual space

In Computing we will begin to look deeper into the world of programming. We be using the ‘Raspberry Pi’s’ to create various types of digital media. First, we will focus on the importance of simple and clear instructions when programming.

As always, a focus of our will be E-Safety. We will be learning about being safe online and how to use computing equipment responsibly and effectively.

In Physical Education, we will be improving our knowledge of movement through covering gymnastics and basketball. This will also remind us of the importance of routine and specific instructions.

In English…

In English we will be focusing on the novel ‘Stay Where You Are and Then Leave’ by John Boyne. We will be using this book as stimulus for all of our writing. In Term 3 we will be focusing on Non-Fiction: Recounts, Letter writing and Diary entries. In Term 4 we will be focusing on Poetry and Biographies.

Science:

Term 3 and 4

In this ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’ unit the children will learn about different materials, their uses and their properties, as well as dissolving, separating mixtures and irreversible changes. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively creating their own investigations.

History:

Term 3: Anglo-Saxons and Scots

This Anglo-Saxons and Scots unit will teach the children about the invasions of the Scots and Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century. They will find out where the invading troops came from and where in Britain they managed to settle. They will learn how the Anglo-Saxons influenced the English language. They will also learn what life was like in a typical Anglo-Saxon village.

Geography:

Term 4: Magnificent Mountains

In this Unit, children find out about the major mountains of the world and the UK. They will find out the different ways in which mountains have been formed, and how different features of mountain ranges have been shaped over time.

In Maths…

Term 3

This term we will be focusing on: Fractions, decimals and percentages and the relationship between them. Children will be applying their learning to problems solving contexts.

Term 4

This term we will be focusing on measure including capacity, lengths, weight, time and money. We will also be focusing on volume, area and perimeter. Children will be applying their learning to problems solving contexts.

  • Buster’s Book Club Winners Week Ending Friday 3rd February 2017
    Well done St. Simon’s class. You are the Reading Class of the Week! You have received the award for most improved. This week you all read for 512 minutes. Wow!  
  • Year 2 Key Stage 1 SAT Meeting Notes
    This year children must be tested in May in Year 2. The children are unaware they are being tested and it is supposed to feel like a normal school day. These tests are to go alongside our teacher assessment of the children. They are not their final result.
  • Book Week (Monday 29th February- Friday 4th March)
    This week we are celebrating ‘Book Week’ at St. Michael’s (Monday 29th February- Friday 4th March). World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March. We have planned and prepared many exciting things for the children.
  • Holocaust Memorial Day 2016
    For Holocaust Memorial Day the children have been researching and learning about this historic event in history.
